George Russell took a maiden grand prix victory - and a first for Mercedes in 2022 - as Max Verstappen was penalised for a collision with Lewis Hamilton in Sao Paulo.

Russell was in control of the race throughout after Verstappen and Hamilton came together as they disputed second place in the early stages at a safety car restart.

Hamilton dropped to ninth place after the collision with his 2021 title rival but came back to secure a Mercedes one-two and seal the team's recovery after a difficult season that the eight-time champions started with an uncompetitive car.

Russell's accomplished drive included him surviving a late safety car that bunched up the field and put Hamilton right behind him heading into the final 10 laps.

We'll also be bidding a final farewell to Sebastian Vettel and a goodbye (for now) to Daniel Ricciardo.

    See you soon!

  3. Leclerc and Perez level on points

  5. 'We work as a team, we race as a team'

Red Bull boss Christian Horner talking to Sky Sports: "As a team, we discuss these things internally. The drivers discussed it, they were very clear.

"We will go to Abu Dhabi to get Checo the second place and Max will support that. We wont talk about what happens internally but the drivers shook hands on it.

"We work as a team, we race as a team and our priority is to help Checo get second in the championship. We will do the best we can to achieve that and if Max can help in any way he will do.

"Of course helping Checo get second place is a priority. He deserves that second place. As a team we will do the best to support that and help him achieve that.

"The important thing is its been addressed and has been dealt with and as a team we will move on.

"Congrats to George on his first victory, he's been strong all weekend. We need to understand why we gave away performance in that sector.

"I thought the penalty was hard I felt Max got ahead, going into the left hander and Lewis could have afforded space there."

  6. 'Both drivers push each other which is very good to see'- Wolff

On James Vowles impact on Russell, Wolff added: "James Vowles was instrumental and is still instrumental withour young driver programme but there are so many life goals that George mentionedin the junior programme. Something that I remember, George’s win in F3 was theonly podium that Niki Lauda ever visited in the junior series and he said back then to me ‘he’s going to become a good one.’

And if Russell ticks boxes for a future world champion, Wolff said: "It's been back andforth he had a very strong start then a bit of a dip but both drivers push eachother which is very good to see, they work well together and that’s how itshould be.”

  7. 'He had no intention to give me space and I no intention to back out'- Verstappen

Max Verstappen finished in P6 said afterwards on his collision with Lewis Hamilton: "It was a good move to try and go around the outside but Ithought he had no intention to give me space and I no intention to back out,and of course we both went off, I had the front wing damage but at the end ofthe day we were too close anyway so it was not really a lot we could havedone."

On the decision to not let Perez past to earn driver’spoint following the teams instructions, he said: “I have my reasons for that, we just discussed that and wetalked about it and basically just move forward from here. If we goto Abu Dhabi and he needs support, it’s all about who finishes ahead anyway soif he needs the help I will be there, but it’s good that we’ve talked about itnow and why I didn’t do it.”

  8. 'After all I've done for him it's disappointing' - Perez

Sergio Perez talking to Sky Sports: "I mean I was told I was going to get back the position, I don't know what the communication was with him on his side."

On Verstappen's refusal to let him pass: "No idea, maybe you should ask him. But I have nothing to say really after all I've done for him its disappointing. I have no idea, I'm really surprised."

On finishing the season in second place: Well we will try, we were down on pace this weekend. I hope we can be back on our usual form in Abu Dhabi."

  9. Russell the rookie

Remember when George Russell was a young puppy on the grid, trying to making his name at Williams? Have a look at this video from when BBC Sport followed the Mercedes man on his day off in Monaco a few years back to see how far he's come.

  10. 'I am elated for the whole team'- Hamilton

Lewis Hamilton said post-race: “I feel really good, we’ve worked so hard thisyear to be where we are, to be fighting for the front row, fighting for thepodium and getting a 1-2, honestly I am elated for the whole team."

On getting a potential Abu Dhabi win next weekend, he said: “Who knows,we didn’t expect to be as quick as we’ve been this weekend so it’s just incrediblethe turnaround and it’s really all down to the men and women back at thefactory who have been working so hard all year round, never giving up, continuingto push. A huge congratulations to George this has been a wonderful win for him.A bit more straight forward of a day for him than me but still I’m grateful Icould be back up there and get a 1-2 for the team.”

  11. Post update

Max Verstappen is next up to the microphone in the media pen and the Dutchman says the words were spoken before the race and it's time to move on. However, if Sergio Perez needs him in Abu Dhabi, Verstappen says he'll "be there".

Christian Horner is on Sky Sports next but the Red Bull team principal, like Verstappen, isn't giving anything away as to what exactly has been discussed between the drivers and crew.

  12. 'It was a difficult season but to see this coming in 1-2 with genuine pace, everybody deserves it in the team'- Wolff

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff spoke to Sky Sports over Facetime: “Shov (Mercedes chief engineer Andrew Shovlin) wouldwant to have me staying at home in the future I’m sure, I couldn’t really annoythem during the race because my intercom was so bad but like Shov said a reallybig congratulations to the team.

"Shov really kept it together trackside andgreat work back at home, it was a difficult season but to see this coming in1-2 with genuine pace, everybody deserves it in the team."

On George Russell’s performance, he added: "Fantastic, he had the win on hishands a few years ago in Bahrain and now he just drove it home, he had a fantasticday today, he had the pace, he coped with the pressure at the end but alsoworked with Lewis. Such a good result!"

  13. Post update

Back to the Red Bull radio messages and while the team were very apologetic to Sergio Perez after Max Verstappen refused to let him through, the Mexican signed off with, "it shows who he really is."

The cameras have spotted team boss Christian Horner having words with the two-time world. champion. Checo tells Sky Sports he's "very surprised" by the incident.

  14. 'Overall it was a good race'- Sainz

Carlos Sainz, who finishes in P3 in the Ferrari, said: “Yeah I think overall it was a good race, we did have someproblems at the start with the breaks on fire, and we had to stop early whichmeant we had to restart which wasn’t the fastest given the degradation but fromthere I pushed flat out to try and catch on Checo. We had a good run on Checoat the end, a good podium starting from P7 and yeah we can be happy with that."

On fighting for the Constructors second place, he added: “Weare clearly on a bit of a defensive mode because Merc were untouchable todayand they were quicker than the Red Bull, quicker than us, I think it’s been afew weekends like that and so in Abu Dhabi we either need to expect them to winor we need to do damage limitation, or go for the win ourselves.”

  15. 'I really had one of the best weeks of my life' - Hamilton

Lewis Hamilton, who finished second: "Firstly a huge congratulations to George! What an amazing drive he did today, he did an amazing qualifying yesterday. Hetruly deserves it!

"To my team back at the factory and here, this is an incredible result, we worked so hard for a 1-2, for awin. Hugely deserved, big, big thank you."

On his collision with Verstappen: "What can I say you know how it is with Max."

On his time at Brazil: "Big, big thank you to everyone. I really had one of the best weeks of my life, with how everyone accepted me here and the warm welcome I had. I'm excited to come back here again. Hopefully some holidays in the future!"

  16. Post update

George Russell also picked up the bonus point for fastest lap. Sprint win, race victory and fastest lap; that's a decent shift for the 24-year-old in Brazil.

  17. 'What an amazing feeling and what a huge thank you to the whole team for making this possible'- Russell

George Russell, who has won his first Grand Prix, said:“What an amazing feeling and what a huge thank you to the whole team for makingthis possible. It’s been an emotional rollercoaster this season, this season, this race. I felt in control, Lewis was super fast and when I saw the safetycar I thought this was going to be a difficult end and he put me under so much pressurebut happy to go away with the victory.

“I’m speechless on the in lap all of these memories sort of comeflooding back and starting off my mum and dad in go-karting and all the supportfrom the rest of my family, my girlfriend my trainer, my manager, the list inendless and I can’t thank you enough.”
